Just when you think you have your quarterback situation under control, Trent Edwards and Brian Griese get knocked out and for the second straight Kyle Orton wins a game for the Chicago Bears through good passing and touchdowns. Carson Palmer tripled his season total of touchdowns at Dallas and Ben Roethlisberger looked masterful in throwing for 309 yards and helping lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to a come-from-behind win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
So even though we don’t need to say it every week, here it is again anyway. It is now more important than ever to check out the Bruno Boys weekly positional rankingsto help determine who should start and who should sit. With that being said, we bring to you the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 6 Quarterback Rankings.
----------------------
1. Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints) vs. Oakland Raiders
Whether you’ve noticed it or not, Brees is quietly putting together an MVP-type of season for the New Orleans Saints. Brees entered the Minnesota game as the league’s third-highest rated passer and he has, despite missing wide receiver Marques Colston, helped New Orleans lead the NFL in passing yards per game. Oakland ranks 19th in passing yards allowed and 22nd in points allowed so we’re looking for another big game out of Brees.
Point Projection: 24 Points
----------------------
2. Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys) at Arizona
Even on the days when Dallas doesn’t play so well, Romo still gets his points. Though the Cowboys almost let a 17-point lead slip away to the lowly Bengals last week, Romo still got three touchdown passes. This week, Dallas plays at Arizona, a team that likes to blitz often. However, if there’s one area where Dallas is underrated at, it would be picking up blitzes. Expect another good game from Romo this week.
Point Projection: 24 Points
----------------------
3. Brett Favre (New York Jets) vs. Cincinnati
Two weeks ago the Jets finally opened the playbook for Brett Favre and look what happens: A personal record five touchdown passes for Favre not to mention a mammoth win over a decent Arizona Cardinals team. Favre and the Jets had a bye last week, giving the quarterback even more time to adjust to his new team and prepare for the upcoming game against Cincinnati. The Bengals have been more resilient in the past few games, but that didn’t stop Romo from throwing three touchdown passes, including two in the second half.
Point Projection: 22 Points
----------------------
4. Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers) at Seattle
One week after having one his worst games of his young career, Rodgers bounced back from the loss to Tampa Bay and threw for 313 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Sure Green Bay lost to Atlanta in that game, but in the fantasy, losing is not a concern. Seeing Rodgers bounce back from a game we he played poorly and injured the shoulder of his throwing arm was vital. It shows that while he still has some room to grow that he’s already taking huge steps in his personal progression as a quarterback and that what happens in the past won’t negatively affect him in the future. Seattle is all kinds of a mess right now so don’t hesitate to start Rodgers this week.
Point Projection: 20 Points
----------------------
5. Eli Manning (New York Giants) at Cleveland
There might not be a bigger mismatch here than Manning versus the Browns secondary. Cleveland is coming off a much needed bye week but will need a lot of luck and some incredible gameplanning to stop Manning and the Giants in this one. Domenik Hixon and Sinorice Moss are both starting to step up at receiver for New York and did we mention that star wideout Plaxico Burress returns for this game? It’s going to get ugly for Cleveland.
Point Projection: 20 Points
----------------------
6. Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles) at San Francisco
The good news for McNabb is that Reggie Brown is back and Kevin Curtis may be back for this game. The bad news is that running back Brian Westbrook broke two ribs in the teams loss to the Redskins last week and is likely out for the second time this season. Take a look at the opponents the Eagles had to face in their first five games (St. Louis, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Washington) and it’s no secret why the team struggled a bit. This week, the Eagles get to play against a defense in San Francisco that’s almost as bad against the pass as St. Louis is, and McNabb registered 26 fantasy points against the Rams. If only Westbrook was healthy for this one.
Point Projection: 18 Points
----------------------
7. Jay Cutler (Denver Broncos) vs. Jacksonville
Tampa Bay was able to limit the scoring opportunities for Cutler and the Broncos last week by the Broncos still threw the ball 37 times while their lead running back rushed just 10 times. Denver is a throwing team and Cutler is the leader behind it, which is a good thing this week as the Broncos host the Jaguars. Jacksonville ranks 26th in passing yards allowed, 21st in total yards allowed and 16th in points allowed. Though Cutler’s output from a fantasy perspective was low last week, it should come back up against the Jaguars.
Point Projection: 18 Points
----------------------
8. Kurt Warner (Arizona Cardinals) vs. Dallas
It’s not secret that the weakness of the Dallas defense is its secondary. While the run defense remains stout, the Cowboys secondary ranks 18th in passing yards allowed. Furthermore, Dallas allowed the hapless Bengals to score two passing touchdowns last week. With both defenses being weak in the secondary, this game will likely turn into a shootout and even if Warner coughs the ball up a few times, he’ll still record a decent number of points.
Point Projection: 17 Points
----------------------
9. Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts) vs. Baltimore
It’s been a struggle so far this season for Manning and the Colts but that may have all changed in their comeback win over the Texans last week. Manning helped Indianapolis come back from 17 points down and looked like the Manning of old where it looks like he’s going to complete every pass while at the same time making defensive backs look silly. We know the Colts aren’t fully back, and they won’t be until they get the offensive issues ironed out. However, it appears as if the offenses is finally starting to click and anytime that happens on this team, it gets scary for the other team.
Point Projection: 17 Points
----------------------
10. David Garrard (Jacksonville Jaguars) at Denver
The first three games of the season it appeared that Garrard was in over his head. Fumbles and interceptions littered the stat sheet for Garrard, who appeared to have lost all ability to take care of the ball like he did so well last season. However, the last two games Garrard has registered double-digit fantasy point totals and has just one turnover in those games. That trend will continue this week as the Jaguars travel to Denver. The Broncos defense has a hard time stopping anybody, that is, unless you count a washed-up Brian Griese.
Point Projection: 16 Points
----------------------
11. Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins) vs. St. Louis
It will be the first game under interim coach Jim Haslett for St. Louis but either way it’s going to be that same group of Rams going out there and playing the games. And they stink. St. Louis has given up 31 or more points in each of its games so far and rank 27th in passing yards allowed and 31st in points allowed. At the same time, Campbell and the Redskins continue to get better and better. With Washington finally getting a home game after an incredibly difficult road trip, this one could get ugly.
Point Projection: 16 Points
----------------------
12. Chad Pennington (Miami Dolphins) at Houston
Against some tough defenses in the team’s first four games, Pennington threw just one interception with three touchdowns while continually adjusting to a new playbook and team. The Dolphins are getting creative with Ronnie Brown and that’s allowed them to open up lanes in the passing game for Pennington, one of the game’s most accurate passers. Brown will against carry a large workload in this game but it could be Pennington who shines against defense that ranks 30th in points allowed.
Point Projection: 15 Points
----------------------
13. Kyle Orton (Chicago Bears) at Atlanta
It was a bit of a struggle to put Orton this high but what can we say? The guy deserves it. He’s got three straight weeks of double-digit fantasy points and threw for a whopping 344 yards last week in the team’s demolition of the Detroit Lions. He’s become comfortable with the offense and his receivers, but more importantly it appears the game has slowed down for him, which was the biggest thing that hampered him when he played as a rookie. Atlanta has some things going well for a team that’s rebuilding, but the fact is the Falcons rank 23rd in both passing yards allowed and total yards allowed.
Point Projection: 15 Points
----------------------
14. Philip Rivers (San Diego Chargers) vs. New England
It was a down week for Rivers and the Chargers as they lost to Miami but even when in a game like that where the team played bad, Rivers still registered double-digit fantasy points and is one of the few quarterbacks to have done that in all five games so far. The New England defense is good but the secondary is vulnerable. As LaDainian Tomlinson continues to struggle, the burden to move the chains will fall on Rivers and he’s shown he’s up for the challenge.
Point Projection: 14 Points
----------------------
15. Matt Cassel (New England Patriots) at San Diego
After back-to-back games where he record six or less fantasy points, Cassel rebounded well last week against the 49ers to get double digits for the second time this season. Cassel has touchdown passes in back-to-back games, signaling that he’s starting to pick up the offense and getting the ball to his playmakers. The San Diego (10 passing TD's allowed) defense is not that good this season and is the worst in the NFL against the pass. The Chargers rank last in passing yards allowed and 25th in points allowed and Bill Bellicheck will look to exploit this early.
Point Projection: 14 Points
----------------------
16. Gus Frerotte (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Detroit
Frerotte hasn’t been much better than Tarvaris Jackson whether it’s been in real life or in fantasy football. Frerotte even struggled against a Saints secondary that isn’t that great. While the Vikings are playing against a Detroit team that just can’t seem to do anything, you still should only consider Frerotte in two quarterback leagues or if you are in a pinch at the position.
Point Projection: 14 Points
----------------------
17. Jake Delhomme (Carolina Panthers) at Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay defense has a habit of making opposing quarterbacks ineffective except when it comes to Delhomme. Delhomme can be fiery for a quarterback but when playing against the Buccaneers he’s as cool as can be. The last two games against Tampa Bay, Delhomme has thrown for 512 yards with three touchdowns against just one interception. Expect a similarly solid performance from Delhomme this week.
Point Projection: 14 Points
----------------------
18. J.T. O’Sullivan (San Francisco 49ers) vs. Philadelphia
New England threw all kinds of blitzes at O’Sullivan last week and he still managed to get 13 fantasy points. And in case you haven’t noticed, O’Sullivan has now recorded four straight double-digit fantasy performances, with the only single-digit game coming in the first week. O’Sullivan continues to get more comfortable with the offense and seeing that he’s already faced a blitz-happy defense in New England last week makes it easy to predict another solid week for the first-year starter. Point Projection: 13 Points
----------------------
19. Matt Schaub (Houston Texans) vs. Miami
Schaub was out with a virus last week and Sage Rosenfels went out and surrendered a 17-point lead to the Colts at home. Unless Schaub can’t physically walk, he’ll be playing in this game against the Dolphins. Schaub has played against some really good defenses so far and did well in two of the three games he’s played. The Dolphins, while much improved over last year, still have some holes on defense that can be exploited.
Point Projection: 12 Points
----------------------
20. Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle Seahawks) vs. Green Bay **Status Uncertain**
Hasselbeck finally has wide receiver Bobby Engram back but that likely won’t be enough to save this offense. A poor rushing game and bad offensive line have left Hasselbeck fighting for his life often and it hasn’t been pretty. He’s recorded double digits just once this season but playing at home this week against the Packers may be a good opportunity for a solid week. The Packers rank 24th in points allowed, but Hasselbeck needs to be healthy to exploit their weaknesses.
Point Projection: 11 Points
----------------------
21. Jeff Garcia/Brian Griese (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) vs. Carolina
Following the Buccaneers’ loss to Denver last week, a game in which Griese got hurt, head coach Jon Gruden was noncommittal in saying who would play quarterback this week. Neither quarterback has played all that well so far and both have played about as equally as bad as the other so whoever starts, you can expect about the same point total.
Point Projection: 9 Points
----------------------
22. Marc Bulger (St. Louis Rams) at Washington
The Rams are turmoil right now but are coming off a bye week with their new coach. While the offense has some potential, they’ve shown nothing close to what their capable of. Two consecutive weeks off won’t help either. Bulger, despite his past successes, is still not fantasy relevant until he proves otherwise.
Point Projection: 8 Points
----------------------
23. Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) vs. Chicago
Ryan showed some good signs of maturation last week in a win over a tough Green Bay defense. In that game, Ryan was 16-of-26 for 194 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Still, with rookie quarterbacks you have to take the good with the bad and going against the Bears defense, there’s going to be some bad.
Point Projection: 8 Points
----------------------
24. JaMarcus Russell (Oakland Raiders) at New Orleans
Russell has received a lot of flack but he is really starting to grow as a passer. Through the first four games, Russell had double-digit point totals and had touchdowns each of those three games. He does has some value for now but with the mess that’s known as the head coaching position in Oakland, it’s best to stay away from Russell for the time being.
Point Projection: 8 Points
----------------------
25. Derek Anderson (Cleveland Browns) vs. New York Giants
Not many quarterbacks play as poorly as Anderson has and retains their job. Browns head coach Romeo Crennel has even said that the team is giving backup Brady Quinn more snaps in practice, and that should tell you how much confidence they have in Anderson. Against a good Giants defense that can swarm quarterbacks and overwhelm them, don’t expect anything other than what we’ve already seen from Anderson.
Point Projection: 6 Points
----------------------
26. Ryan Fitzpatrick (Cincinnati Bengals) at New York Jets
After playing throw pain in his throwing elbow last week, the Bengals have decided that Carson Palmer will not start in Week 6. This will open up the door for Fitzpatrick to get his second start of the season and his matchup against the bottom feeding Jets passing defense. However, in Week 4 Fitzpatrick showed his inability to fully compete at this level and it could be another long day for the Bengals offense, regardless of their opponent.
Point Projection: 6 Points
----------------------
27. Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens) at Indianapolis
Flacco has been alright so far for a rookie, but now he’ll be faced with one his toughest challenges yet when the team travels to Indianapolis. The Colts are decent at defending the pass and Indianapolis is a tough place to play at. For now and the near future, Flacco remains a non-option in fantasy leagues.
Point Projection: 5 Points
----------------------
28. Dan Orlovsky (Detroit Lions) at Minnesota
After recording double-digit fantasy totals in the first two weeks of the season, Kitna has been horrible sense. His back injury caused him to miss the second half in Week 5 and will prevent him from playing in Week 6 The Vikings pass defense isn’t great but the Lions can’t run the ball at all and Minnesota knows that Dan Orlovsky will have to make plays to win the game. Expect the Vikings to put a lot of pressure on the quarterback, something Detroit hasn’t dealt well with so far.
Point Projection: 5 Points
----------------------
WEEK 6 BYE WEEK QUARTERBACKS
Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers) - BYE
Roethlisberger is banged up alright but he looked pretty good on that final drive that helped the Steelers come from behind to win at Jacksonville last week. Plus, you can't overlook his three touchdown passes in that game. He will use the bye week to get healthy for the crucial part of the season.
----------------------
Kerry Collins (Tennessee Titans) - BYE
Collins has it pretty easy in Tennessee. Two good running backs that complement each other well plus one of the league’s best defenses means all Collins has to do is not screw things up.
----------------------
Damon Huard/Brodie Croyle (Kansas City Chiefs) - BYE
The Chiefs are a huge work in progress and even though Huard had a few solid fantasy performances last year, Huard should not even be on your fantasy radar. Especially with Brodie Croyle expected to take over as the starter after the Chiefs Week 6 bye.
----------------------
Trent Edwards/J.P. Losman (Buffalo Bills) - BYE
Edwards took a vicious hit and left the game concussed last week. Even though Losman played well in relief, the Bills are hoping for a speedy recovery for Edwards.
