Welcome to this year's final edition of Busts, and although it's difficult to find busts in the land of Disney, if you look hard enough; you'll find plenty. Jay Williamson tossed up the 76-74 on two of the easiest courses on Tour, and finished dead last. There are other such heart-warming stories such as Daniel Chopra bringing his roll of stamps and mailing in a 71-69. These stories, much like Christmas, keep giving and giving. Although it was difficult to narrow it down to three; the long arduous task has been completed, and it's time for the last Tournament Busts of 2008.
Jesper Parnevik - He shot 70-71 and missed the cut by two shots. He will end the year at 143rd on the Money List, and while he may have a chance at Q-School, and may have some Sponsor's Exemptions lined up; but the reality of the situation is that it's very possible the 40-year-old will not be a member of the PGA Tour full-time next year. So, where does he go? The Nationwide Tour seems out of the question, and the European PGA Tour seems like a decent option; but what if he continues to struggle there. Is it the Challenge Series after that? Parnevik has some serious issues to work out with his golf swing. He's terrible from all facets. He can't hit long, he can't hit the fairway, he can't hit the green, and he can't make a putt. All in all, that's not going to win you much money. It would be nice to see Parnevik find his way back on Tour at some point; but it's going to take an awful lot of work to accomplish that.
Brad Adamonis - It appears that Adamonis is just going to get into the top-125, and receive a Tour Card for 2009. However, this is not due to lack of trying by Adamonis to head back to the Nationwide Tour. After he finished in a T-10th at the Justin Timberlake (which put him at 108th on the Money List), it appeared as if Adamonis had a spot locked up. He then went on to miss four straight cuts (including this week, shooting 74-69, to miss the cut by three shots); and currently sits (tenuously) at 124th on the Money List. That is NOT a final number; there's still accounting and "officializing" to go on. It's very likely that Adamonis will finish right at 124th where he stands now; but the possibility is that he might not; and if he drops out of the top-125, it's no one's fault but his own. It's inexcusable against these fields to miss four straight cuts; and if he does luck out and makes it on the Tour next year; he's going to have a lot of work to do as well.
Briny Baird - He had a terrific overall season; making a late-career push generating the best results of his career. He made 26 of 30 cuts, had 14 top-25s and three top-10s on the season, and his OWGR jumped 118 spots to 105th, and it may go higher than that. One would think that he'd try to get on this last tournament in the Fall Series, and try to net an outright win to cap off a stellar season. Or, you could shoot 71-69 and miss the cut, giving yourself the weekend to spend in Orlando. You could let players like Michael Bradley, Mathias Gronberg and Tom Sherrer finish ahead of you (don't know who they are? Me either, that's the point). Briny, you're supposed to be a second-level player at this point; and missing cuts at Disney World isn't how to go about it. Tiger could go out and hop on his one good leg the whole time and win, or at worst finish top-5. You? You missed the cut. And now you get to think about it all winter. There are expectations surrounding you now Briny. Missing cuts here aren't one of them.
Thank you for reading PGA Tournament Busts this season. We'll see you again in January 2009.
