MLB Top Weekly Performances – First Basemen

Once again the first base position proves be the backbone of every team. There are so many talented first basemen out there and their numbers can be the difference between a winning season and a losing season. This week was no different, except that the one with the best week may not have been the player you’d have expected to put up the top numbers. Joey Votto makes his case for AL ROY and put up better numbers, as a whole, than Miggy Cabrera and Justin Morneau. These three players were extremely solid and have helped many teams this week.

Gold

Joey Votto (1B - Cincinnati Reds) - If it weren’t for so many great rookies this year then Joey Votto would probably have run away with the Rookie of the Year award. He has been a pleasant surprise for the Reds and he seems to be a fixture in their lineup for many years. The Reds needed a talented offensive player extremely badly after losing Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. and it seems like they got that in Votto. Not only that but Votto is also very solid defensively. He had an unbelievably solid week and is quite deserving of top honors.

10/24, 6 runs, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 0 SB, .417 AVG

Silver

Miguel Cabrera (1B/3B - Detroit Tigers) - What a week for Cabrera! Earlier in the season he looked like a complete bust, but now he finally looks like the elite player they got. Sadly he played third base like his feet were stuck in buckets of cement, but luckily his bat has come alive. It’s odd that the Tigers had such an unproductive year because they have so many talented players and Miggy is numero uno. He hit three homeruns in three days this week, plus a ton of RBI. He’s put up very friendly fantasy numbers at a very important time. It definitely looks like the trade worked out for the Tigers.

8/22, 3 runs, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 0 SB, .364 AVG

Bronze

Justin Morneau (1B - Minnesota Twins) - Once again Morneau makes this list. Perhaps he’ll finally get the recognition he deserves, especially considering how consistent he’s been. He may not be as good as someone like Albert Pujols, but he’s very consistent and helps fantasy owners week in and week out. The Twins have started to hit a skid and are losing their chance at the AL Wild Card, but Morneau will most likely be the biggest reason if they can come back and clinch it. He’s one of my favorite players in the league and is an elite fantasy first baseman, even if he doesn’t get the recognition of others.

7/24, 5 runs, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 0 SB, .292 AVG
