Serena Hays here, sitting in for TommyD on this final edition of NBA Top
Centers. With a few tips from The Man himself, I was able to narrow this
week's top performers down to three. I struggled with who to put in that
third spot, however, and so I have an honorable mention at the bottom.
Let's see who helped you win that championship, here are this week's Top
Centers:
Amare Stoudemire, PHO: Amare may be playing at
the four with Shaq on the court, but he still runs the post and he's excelled
at it this season. He's dominated every single center in the league at
one time or another, and he's dominated this list. Last week he averaged
29.3 points, eight rebounds, 2.5 assists, one steal, 1.5 blocks and 2.3
turnovers in 36.3 minutes. Last year he came out to prove he could still
ball after breaking his leg and it looks like that has become his
mission. He lit up fantasy scoreboards this season and helped the Suns
clinch the 6th spot in the West.
Dwight Howard, ORL: Dwight Howard is a monster,
much on the same level as LeBron James. He's just flat-out good at
everything he does on the court, and this year he's led the Magic to the
playoffs for the second consecutive season. Last week he averaged 21
points, 14.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, one steal, one block and 3.3 turnovers in
36.3 minutes. Howard, like Stoudemire, dominates the post and can dunk on
anyone. He helped many fantasy owners this season, and now he gets to
keep helping Orlando in the
post-season.
Mehmet Okur, UTH: The Jazz have quietly had a
great season, and that is partially thanks to the play of Mehmet Okur.
He's not loud or flashy like Dwight Howard, but he gets the job done and goes
about his business. Last week Okur averaged 20.3 points, 15.3 rebounds,
2.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 1.3 turnovers in 38.6 minutes. Many people
attribute Utah's success to
Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams, but Okur has definitely played his part and
he's done it well. Fantasy owners who grabbed him off waivers and
traded for him in January were not disappointed.
Honorable Mention: Andris Biedrens of the Golden
State Warriors. Biedrens
hasn't had a great season, but he hasn't had a horrible season either.
Last week he stepped it up a notch in an effort to push the Warriors past Denver
and into the playoffs. He averaged 13.8 points, 16.3 rebounds, 0.8
steals, 1.8 blocks and just 1.3 turnovers in 36 minutes. He definitely
helped out some championship teams this week.
That's it for the final edition of Top Centers. Make
