PGA Tournament Busts: Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital Open - TPC Summerlin - Las Vegas, NV

You take the good with the bad, I suppose, but excuses are few and far between this week for these three; the bustiest busts that ever busted.  Well, that is, that busted this week.  Anyway, this week's list includes a couple of golfers that are battling for a spot in the top-125; and the other was the highest ranked golfer in the tournament.  It was a beautiful week of golf, no matter how ugly these three tried to make it; so let's get to the dogs busts of the week.

Rory Sabbatini - The highest ranked player in the World according to the OWGR (24th) shot 69-74 and missed the cut by a couple of shots.  In other words, he wasn't even close.  I doubt he got an appearance fee, so I don't understand what would have happened here; but 74 was the third worst round shot on the course this week.  He was just 57.1% in Driving Accuracy, which is awful, but shouldn't have made that much of a difference.  He was 306.1 yds/drive, which is actually pretty good.  However, his putter was Sergio Garcia giggle-inducing.  He was at 31.5 Putts Per Round, and 1.808 Putting Average.  That takes work to be that bad.  He was also just 72.2% in Greens In Regulation - which isn't really bad at all, but when you're putting like he was, it doesn't matter.  It was a bad week by the best golfer in the field this week.

Martin Laird - He was as hot as any golfer leading up to the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but now he's fallen completely off the map, and is in peril of losing his card.  He finished T-47th (67-68-70-69) and currently sits at 125th on the Money List, down from 120th.  In essence, another finish like that and he's out of the top-125.  Should he, indeed, drop out of the top-125; I don't foresee a way for him to get back in.  His putter was his downfall as well.  He finished T-44th in Driving Accuracy and T-19th in Driving Distance.  He was 36th in Greens In Regulation.  He was 32nd in Putts Per Round and 64th in Putts Per Greens in Regulation; which isn't going to win you much of anything, and it sure didn't this week.

Nick Watney - At one point this year he was a rising star that was looking to break through.  However, he's now in serious danger of missing out on his chance at a card for 2009.  He shot 63-68-73-68 (-16) to finish T-36th and dropped from 117th to 121st on the Money List.  He had better hope that he has a top-25 at some point before the season's over, or he's going to miss out.  This week, it was, as seems to be the recurring theme; it was Watney's putter that failed him.  This week, he was T-67th in Driving Distance and T-5th in Driving Distance.  He was also T-22nd in Greens In Regulation.  However, as I mentioned, he was T-56th in Putts Per Round, and T-47th in Putts Per Greens In Regulation.  That's bad, and that's not going to work.  He's going to need to tighten that up in the coming years if he expects to ever be a player, a big-time player, on the PGA Tour.
