PGA Tournament Sleepers: Turning Stone Resort Championship - Atunyote Golf Club - Verona, NY

It's the Fall Series; the FedEx Cup Playoffs are behind us, and now it's time for the unmitigated joy of watching a guy keep his card.  Sure, these aren't household names; and if you weren't playing Fantasy you probably wouldn't care; but nearly every week we're looking at a feel good story about a journeyman who earned just enough to keep his card; or better yet, won a tournament and got a two-year exemption.  That's what the Fall Series is all about.  The fat cats have gone home, and now the blue-collar workin' stiffs are at work trying to earn their check.  And if they want to earn their check this week; they'd better eat their Wheaties and bring their big boy drivers.  This week's course plays over 7,400 yards, and it's not one of those fake ones where it's 7,400 yards but all downhill.  So if you didn't like the "starts" I gave you from yesterday; here are this week's sleeper picks.

Lee Janzen - I know, I spent the last hundred words telling you how long the course is; and then I go and pick 44-year old Lee Janzen.  Well, he doesn't hit as short as you think he does.  He is 116th in Driving Distance (284.9 yds/drive) and while it's certainly not the stat of a bomber; it's pretty respectable, and should be "good enough".  In other words, he might only lose a couple of strokes over the course of the tournament; where as some players might lose five or six.  Of late, his average is around 291 yds/drive (over the last six tournaments), which makes his case even more.  He's playing his best golf in the last few years over the last five weeks.  He's made four of the last five cuts, and has three top-25s in that time.  Also, he captained the United States Ryder Cup team to a win, and it seems as if he's finally put all his injuries and illnesses behind him.  It's a weak field, he's got a lot of experience, and he's playing well.  I like his chances for a good finish this week.

Tim Herron - And speaking of players playing their best golf of the year; after a ridiculously rocky and inconsistent year - Herron has just completed his best three tournament stretch of the year, including a T-5th at the Deutche Bank.  Again, Herron's been a missed cut machine all season long; which puts him way back in sleeper land here.  But, he's 68th in Driving Distance (at 291.1 yds/drive), and has averaged over 300 yds/drive over his last five tournaments.  The question will be; can he keep it in the fairway, and can he get it on the green?  He is a decent putter, 82nd in Putting Average and 30th in Putts Per Round.  I think he'll be in contact anyway, unless he completely tanks and falls off the map.  I suppose that's why they're sleepers.  But, as sleepers go, you could do worse.

John Merrick - Wow, I haven't busted out John Merrick in a while, but the fact is, this is the type of course that Merrick should succeed on.  He has made six straight cuts and did make it all the way to the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but he really got lost in the shuffle as the season went on and never really made a splash.  However, he has been in the mix in the watered-down field tournaments, and this just happens to fall into that category.  He's also 20th in Driving Distance (299 yds/drive) and 61st in Driving Accuracy, which makes him the third best driver on Tour.  This week, if you need anything, you need to be able to drive the golf ball; and he is the best in the field this week.  He's also 25th in Greens In regulation.  He is horrific (134th Putting Average, 172nd Putts Per Round) with the flat stick; but on a course like this, if he can pull it together even a little bit, he can make a really strong push to win this week.
