PGA Weekly Sleepers: Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital Open - TPC Summerlin - Las Vegas, NV

This is going to be a pretty straight-forward "sleepers" without much nuance involved.  It's a big, long course without many trees, bunkers, or other impediments that would prevent someone for just ripping it off the tee.  The greens aren't that tough either; so essentially what we're looking at is one of those "Long Drive Contests" this week.  You'd actually think that a John Daly would have an advantage, considering he's been involved in a few of those, but no, he's not a sleeper this week.  I told you to Sit Em, remember?  However, that's what I'm going to be looking for almost exclusively this week for sleepers: long hitters.  Are you ready?  Here are this week's Weekly Sleepers:

Dustin Johnson - Oh yeah, we remember him right?  Won at the Turning Stone a couple of weeks ago?  Secured himself a two-year exemption there?  Him.  Yes, Johnson is back on a course (not as long as at the Turning Stone, but pretty long) that suits his game, and certainly has to be considered "in the mix" this week.  I mean, he's 4th on Tour in Driving Distance at 309.9 yds/drive.  The only player in the field ahead of Johnson in Driving Distance is Robert Garrigus, who you could argue should be on this list and Johnson on the Start Em Sit Em list.  They're that interchangeable.  Maybe his 194th in Driving Accuracy (which shouldn't matter a whole bunch) and 115th in Greens In Regulation scared me out of calling him a sure "start", although his 66th in Putting Average and 110th in Putts Per Round should have allayed my fears a bit.  Whatever, you're getting him as a sleeper, and he's a really good one.

Jason Gore - After a three-plus year hiatus from the Tour scene in terms of being a threat to win a tournament, this one sets up beautifully for the former "out of nowhere" contender at the U.S. Open in 2005.  Gore is still the 11th longest hitter on Tour (300.7 yds/drive) and has a surprisingly complete game to go along with it.  He's 49th in Driving Accuracy, which makes him 1st Overall on Tour in Total Driving.  He's 54th in Greens In Regulation.  He's 38th in Putting Average and 97th in Putts Per Round.  So the question is, why hasn't this guy won at all in the last couple of years?  We'll see if he can put it together this week.  Again, it really sets up for him, we'll see how it breaks.

Steve Marino - He's got as many missed cuts (five, 24/29) as top-10 finishes (five) this season, and has won over $1.6 million this season; not to mention he was a personal "C Group" binky of mine for most of the season.  Why is he here then?  Maybe he's cherrypicking.  Maybe he wants to help the Shriners Hospitals.  Maybe he's just a really big fan of Justin Timberlake.  Who knows, all I know is, he's one of the best players in this field, and could get lost in the shuffle.  Marino hits long, but he's only 54th in Driving Distance.  Normally that wouldn't matter, and it may not; it might be too short to hang with the big bombers.  He's 104th in Driving Accuracy, 18th in Greens In Regulation and 66th in Putting Average.  Clearly, he's got the complete game to go with a big stick, and if he wants to finally put it together for a big win this season (and exempt himself through 2010); this would be the best time to do it.
